3 Day Foundation Course for Nurses

Part 1: 2 Day Interactive Virtual Lectures

9th & 10th March 2022

This 3 day course consists of 2 days of interactive virtual lectures and 1 day of face-to-face small group teaching.


The Foundation training will cover the core skills required for effective patient assessment in the preoperative clinic. This course is suitable for all band 5 or 6 nurses working in the field of POA, independent or NHS sectors. Allied professionals such as Pharmacists / ODPs are also welcome to attend.


The 2 days of interactive virtual lectures will cover the core topics of preoperative assessment.

This 3 day course consists of 2 days of interactive virtual lectures and 1 day of face-to-face small group teaching.


The Foundation training will cover the core skills required for effective patient assessment in the preoperative clinic. This course is suitable for all band 5 or 6 nurses working in the field of preoperative assessment.


The 1 day face-to face small group teaching will consolidate the information of Foundation course Part 1 with case scenarios and problem solving.

Part 2: 1 Day Face-to-Face Small Group Teaching

The Preoperative Association is delighted to announce a new Foundation Course for Preoperative Assessment Nurses. This 3 day Foundation Course consists of 2 days of interactive virtual lectures and 1 day of face-to-face small group teaching.

Interpretation of Routine Preoperative Investigations for Nurses: Virtual Study Day

2 Day Advanced Course for Nurses

The Advanced Preoperative Assessment course is designed to meet the requirements of the POA team leaders (Nurses of band 6 or higher), who in their work will be required to determine outcomes for the patient with complex needs. They will be given the opportunity to create a process map for their service.


This course will involve consideration of the patient with multiple comorbidities, managing the patient with complex health needs, interpret ECG, Spirometry and learn the need for accuracy with airway assessments and chest auscultation. The individuals will have the opportunity to examine patients.


Teaching will be delivered by the Preoperative Association Council. A unique inter-professional team of national experts in Preoperative Assessment - Nurses, Anaesthetists and Pharmacists.
