Ciara qualified from Queen’s University, Belfast, in 2009. Prior to commencing anaesthetic training, Ciara was an ACCS trainee working in Emergency and General Medicine. During which time, she completed her membership exams in both specialties.

 

Ciara commenced anaesthetic training in August 2013, completed her FRCA in 2015 and obtained a distinction in the CPOC Perioperative Medicine Masters in 2020. Ciara was the first author of a systematic review on the impact of dexamethasone on postoperative pain in adults undergoing general anaesthesia for elective abdominal surgery. During anaesthetic training, Ciara also undertook clinical teaching and perioperative medicine fellowships.

 

She qualified as a Consultant Anaesthetist in 2021, initially working in the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, moving to the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust in 2022. During her time as a consultant, she has had the opportunity to develop her interests and services relating to perioperative medicine, patient safety, quality improvement and education. Currently Ciara is working in a team to build and implement an electronic care record for anaesthetists working across the region.


Since joining the board of the Preoperative Association, Chris and Ciara have led the creation and delivery of the first masters module in preoperative clinical practice for nurses and allied healthcare professionals in the UK.
