Consultant Nurse Lead Preoperative Assessment Service

Claire has been a nurse in surgery since qualification in 1998, both in the UK and in Australia. From 2000 to 2014 Claire worked within the specialty of Cardiothoracic, within the Intensive Care setting and also as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner on the Cardiothoracic ward.

Claire commenced her current role of Consultant Nurse Lead for Preoperative Assessment at UHCW in 2014, being responsible for leading and developing the centralised service across two hospital sites.

In 2018 Claire completed an National Institute Health Research (NIHR)/ Health Education England (HEE) funded Master of Science by Research in Clinical Practice, at Coventry University. Her systematic review examined if psychological preparation delivered preoperatively improves surgical outcome in patients with a high anaesthetic risk.

Claire is a huge advocate of the value of preoperative assessment in the patient’s surgical journey, and works collaboratively to achieve a patient focused service with an ethos of continuous quality improvement and innovation. A current, exciting project involves working with the Information Technology department to build an in-house digital preoperative assessment solution.
